RBS Test Overview

Blood glucose (sugar) is derived from food and it is the main source of energy.   If a person has high blood glucose level then this condition is known as diabetes while if it is low it is known as hypoglycemia.
Diabetic patients should monitor their glucose or HbA1c levels regularly to evaluate control of blood glucose in body.
Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a group of metabolic disorders characterized by a high blood sugar level (hyperglycemia) over a prolonged period of time.
Symptoms often include frequent urination, increased thirst and increased appetite. If left untreated, diabetes can cause many health complications.

Reasons for Undergoing the RBS Test

The random glucose test or RBS test, is a crucial diagnostic tool for various reasons. Here are some key reasons why one might undergo a random blood sugar test:

  • Diabetes Diagnosis: The RBS test is used to diagnose diabetes, especially when symptoms are present. A high blood glucose level at any time of the day can indicate diabetes.
  • Monitoring Diabetes Control: For individuals already diagnosed with diabetes, the random blood sugar test helps in assessing whether the diabetes is well-controlled or not.
  • Screening for Gestational Diabetes: Although not the primary method, RBS blood tests can be part of the screening process for gestational diabetes in pregnant women
  • Detecting Hypoglycemia: The RBS test can help identify low blood sugar levels, crucial for managing diabetes and preventing complications.
  • Identifying Other Metabolic Disorders: Abnormal blood sugar levels can indicate other metabolic disorders such as impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, or metabolic syndrome.

List of Parameters Considered During RBS Test

The random glucose test or RBS test, primarily focuses on measuring the amount of glucose in the blood. Here's what the parameter indicates:

  • Blood Glucose Level: This is the main measurement, expressed in milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) or millimoles per litre (mmol/L).

  • Normal Levels: Typically, a random blood glucose level below 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is considered normal, though this can vary slightly depending on the laboratory and individual health status.

  • Prediabetes/Impaired Glucose Tolerance: Levels between 140-199 mg/dL (7.8-11 mmol/L) may indicate prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance.

  • Diabetes: Levels of 200 mg/dL (11 mmol/L) or higher often indicate diabetes

  • Hypoglycemia: Levels below 70 mg/dL (3.9 mmol/L) indicate low blood sugar

This test is done to diagnose patients suspected to be suffering from diabetes. This test can be done at ay time of the day and does not require fasting or post meal states. Though HbA1c is a preferred test to diagnose diabetes due to several advantages but blood glucose estimation is the test of choice for diagnosis in patients of hemoglobin variants, sickle cell anemia, pregnancy (2nd & 3rd trimester), postpartum (immediately after pregnancy), G6PD deficiency, HIV, hemodialysis, recent blood loss, transfusion or erythropoeitin therapy. In the above mentioned cases HbA1c is not used to diagnose diabetes.

This test measures blood glucose levels in plasma of the patient.

This test requires a blood sample. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Result values considered normal or abnormal differ basis type of test done i.e., random, fasting, post-prandial
