Non Veg Allergy Test Overview

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel is a blood test used to identify potential allergies to various commonly consumed animal-derived foods. It measures the immune system's response (specifically IgE antibodies) to these food allergens. This test helps diagnose allergies to meat, seafood, and eggs if you experience symptoms like hives, itching, swelling, cramps, nausea, or other allergic reactions after eating them. The panel tests for individual allergens like pork, egg yolk, chicken, beef, salmon, tuna, shrimp/prawns, cod, mussels, and egg white. Additionally, it includes a total IgE level to provide a general indicator of allergic tendencies. By pinpointing specific non-vegetarian triggers, this test helps individuals and their doctors create safe food plans and avoid potential allergic reactions.

The Non Veg Allergy Test is a diagnostic test designed to identify specific food allergies to non-vegetarian foods. This test measures the body's immune response to various non-vegetarian food allergens, such as chicken, beef, salmon, tuna, shrimp, pork, codfish, egg yolk, egg white, and blue mussel. By detecting the presence and amount of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies produced by the body in response to these foods, the test helps determine an individual's sensitivity to non-vegetarian food items.

The Non Veg Allergy Test is particularly useful for individuals who experience unexplainable symptoms like stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, or skin rash after consuming non-vegetarian food. It is also recommended for those with a family history of allergies or those who need to monitor and track the effectiveness of their allergy treatment.

Reasons for Undergoing the Non Veg Allergy Test

There are several reasons why you might need to undergo the Non Veg Allergy Test:

  • If you experience stomach pain, diarrhoea, vomiting, or skin rashes after consuming non-vegetarian foods
  • For accurately diagnosing food allergies to specific non-vegetarian foods
  • For identifying the specific foods causing your allergic reactions
  • For identifying food allergies that can cause potentially life-threatening allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis

List of Parameters Considered During the Non Veg Allergy Test

The Non Veg Allergy Test measures specific parameters to identify potential food allergies:

  • IgE Antibodies: The test measures the presence and levels of specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies produced by the body in response to various non-vegetarian foods. High levels of these antibodies indicate a potential food allergy.

Non Veg Allergy Test Preparation

To ensure accurate results, there are several steps you should follow when preparing for the Non Veg Allergy Test:

  • Medical History: Discuss your medical history, including any known allergies, with your doctor before the test.
  • Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications you are taking, especially antihistamines, which should be avoided for at least a week before the test to ensure accurate results.
  • Recent Travels: Let your doctor know about any recent travels or changes in location, as exposure to different allergens could influence the test results.

Non Veg Allergy Test Results & Interpretation

The results of the Non Veg Allergy Test indicate the presence and levels of specific IgE antibodies against the tested non-vegetarian foods:

  • Positive Result: A positive result indicates that you are allergic to the specific food, as shown by increased levels of allergen-specific IgE antibodies.
  • Negative Result: A negative result helps rule out a food allergy but may require other tests for differential diagnosis if symptoms persist.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Allergy - Non-vegetarian Panel is done for several reasons to diagnose and manage potential allergies to animal-derived foods:

  • Identifying Specific Triggers: This test helps pinpoint exactly which non-vegetarian foods you might be allergic to.

  • Improved Food Management: Knowing exactly what triggers your allergy allows you and your doctor to develop a safe and personalized food plan.

  • Differential Diagnosis: Sometimes, symptoms can be caused by intolerances or other digestive issues that mimic allergies. This test helps differentiate between a true allergy and other conditions, leading to more targeted management strategies.

  • Guidance for Other Tests: Depending on the results of this panel, your doctor might recommend further testing for specific allergies within the positive categories.

Non-vegetarian allergy test measures the IgE-mediated response to 10 common non-vegetarian food sources:

  1. Pork (Sus Spp.)
  2. Egg Yolk (Anda)
  3. Chicken Meat (Gallus Spp./Murgi)
  4. Beef (Bos spp)
  5. Salmon (Salmo Salar/Rawas)
  6. Tuna (Thunnus Albacares)
  7. Shrimp/Prawns
  8. Cod Fish (Gadus Morhua/Machhli )
  9. Blue Mussel (Mytilus Edulis)
  10. Egg White (Anda)

Total IgE levels are also measured.

Non veg allergy test requires a blood sample post exposure to the allergens. A tourniquet (elastic) band is placed tightly on the upper arm. The patient is then asked to make a fist. This helps in the build-up of blood filling the veins. The skin is disinfected before needle insertion and the blood sample is collected in vacutainer.

Positive result to an allergen indicates that the person is allergic to it. Increased IgE levels further confirms that. Very often the test may be positive for more than one allergen as well. The further treatment course is decided based on the results. Based on the symptom, age, environmental allergens, and region wise allergens further testing may be required for specific diagnosis. Negative result may require other tests for differential diagnosis

Typically, no special precautions need to be taken for the test. However, one should enquire with the doctor about taking specific precautions like avoiding certain foods (especially non-vegetarian foods) etc.

For measuring allergen-specific IgE, ImmunoCAP is a precise approach from the second generation of in vitro assays that has excellent reliability and reproducibility.

Eczema is a skin condition wherein the patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked, and rough. Some can also result in blisters.
